The Amazon, River of the sun

These days if some one says Amazon, we think they are talking about Amazon company, the online shopping pioneer. But the real Amazon, is the great river in South America, which is the second longest river in the world.

River Amazon is the largest by water-flow with an average discharge of water from it is greater than the next seven largest rivers combined. The Amazon, which has the largest drainage basin in the world, accounts for approximately one-fifth of the world's total river flow.

The width of the Amazon varies between 1.6 and 10 kilometers at low stage, but expands during the wet season to 48 kilometers or more. The river enters the Atlantic Ocean in a broad estuary (the wide part of a river where it nears the sea; fresh and salt water mix) about 240 kilometers wide. Because of its vast dimensions, it is sometimes called The River Sea.

'The Amazon, River of the sun', is a documentary about mighty Amazon river which is home to more than 50% of Animal and Plants in the world.

You may wonder why the title says 'River of the sun' ? Amazon river flows mainly near the equator and the sunlight is intense in equator.

The equator is not only the line that divides the Earth in two – it’s also a line of life and a powerful force of nature, where the pace of evolution quickens. The equator covers only five per cent of the Earth’s surface, but is home to 50 per cent of its animal and plant species. The equator is a species factory.

Lake Victoria, Africa

Many of us have not heard of Lake Victoria in Africa. May be it is not a well known tourist destination, but there are some specialties which are worth knowing it.
Lake Victoria lies mainly in Tanzania and Uganda bordering Kenya in Africa. If you are not familiar with Africa, it comes somewhere south-east of Africa. Take a look in the Map.

Specialties of Lake Victoria
1) It is the largest lake in Africa
2) It is the largest tropical lake (situated in the region of equator) in the world.
3) It is the world's second largest freshwater lake (inland natural water that is not salty) by surface area; only Lake Superior in North America (US & Canada) is larger.
4) It is the ninth largest continental lake by volume.

The lake was named after Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom, by John Hanning Speke, the first European to discover this lake.
Also Lake victoria is the chief reservoir (Lake used to store water for community use) of the river Nile.

In this video, you will get to know the current regretful state of this lake. Fishing business got affected, deadly  diseases are spread among the local communities and how miserably the business women needs to offer sex to run their business.
